Brent Burris
Brent Burris is currently in his fifteenth year of teaching in the
state of Kentucky, and his first for the Muhlenberg Public School
System. He previously served as Director of Bands for the Cumberland
County Public School System in Burkesville, and as a Graduate Teaching
Assistant at Western Kentucky University. He holds Bachelor of Music
Education and Master of Arts in Education degrees from W.K.U. (1994,
1995), and is currently enrolled in the Educational Leadership Program
(Rank I) at Eastern Kentucky University.
Mr. Burris’ current responsibilities include
directing the 6th Grade Beginning Band, the 7/8 Middle School
Band, 8th Grade Music Core Content, and serves as Co-Director
of the Muhlenberg South High School Band (all with Chris McGee). Concert
Bands under his direction have made two appearances at the Kentucky
Music Educators In-Service Conference (Cumberland Symphonic, 2002;
Cumberland Middle, 2004), performed at the Dixie Classic Grand National
Adjudicator’s Festival, and have been named a Dixie Classic Festival
Honor Group. His marching bands have been named Bands of America Grand
National Semi-finalists, Bands of America Grand National Class A
Finalists, and have also earned numerous Distinguished and Grand
Champion Awards. The 2007 Muhlenberg South Marching Suns were named the
KMEA Class AA State Champion.
Students under his direction have been named to the
KMEA All-State Symphonic and Concert Bands, University of Kentucky
Honors Wind Ensemble, Western Kentucky University Honors Band, Murray
State University Quad State, and the Kentucky All-State Baptist Youth
Orchestra.
Mr. Burris has served on the KMEA Board of
Directors, KMEA Conference Planning Committee, President of the Kentucky
Third District Music Educators Association, Band Chair of the Third
District Band Directors Association, Marching Band Committee District
Three Representative, and is a member of Phi Beta Mu and Phi Mu Alpha
Sinfonia. He was named Outstanding Young Band Director by Phi Beta Mu
for the state of Kentucky in 2003, been twice included in Who’s Who of
America’s Teachers, and has received Citations from the Kentucky Senate
and House of Representatives for his accomplishments.
He and his wife Tracey (a 1990 graduate of
Muhlenberg Central High School), a primary teacher, are the proud
parents of Kelsey (age 9), and Will (age 5). They currently make their
home in Greenville.
